FAULT FINDING & REPAIRS
MELTON & EYNESBURY
When the power keeps tripping or part of the house goes dark, you need someone who finds the actual cause, not someone who guesses and charges you for it. DTW diagnoses electrical faults methodically and fixes them properly the first time.
Hidden faults can be a real safety risk. Getting them sorted early protects your property and your family. If something is sparking or smells hot right now, see the emergency electrician page for what to do first.

TIME TO CALL IF…
FAULT FINDING PROCESS
LISTEN & INSPECT
We start by understanding the symptoms, what trips, when it trips and what was happening beforehand. A visual inspection of the affected areas follows.
TRACE & TEST
Using test equipment we isolate the fault to the exact cable, connection or device. No guesswork, no swapping parts hoping it fixes itself.
FIX AT THE SOURCE
The fault is repaired properly, not reset and monitored. You're told what caused it and what was done, in plain language, before we leave.
HOW WE ACTUALLY FIND THE FAULT
Fault finding is a process of elimination, not guesswork. The circuit gets isolated, then tested and divided until the fault is cornered to a specific length of cable, a specific accessory or a specific appliance. Most faults are found inside an hour. Intermittent ones take longer, because a fault that only appears when it rains or when the dryer runs has to be reproduced before it can be proven.
NUISANCE TRIPPING
A safety switch that trips occasionally is usually doing its job. The common causes are moisture in an outdoor circuit, a failing element in a hot water service, oven or dryer, or a shared neutral across two circuits. Each has a different fix and each is identifiable with the right test.
THE TESTS THAT MATTER
Insulation resistance testing finds cable that has broken down internally. Loop impedance confirms the circuit will actually trip fast enough under fault. A clamp meter finds leakage current while everything is still running. Guessing skips all three.
WHAT GUESSING COSTS
The expensive version of this job is replacing parts in sequence until something works. A new oven element, then a new switch, then a new RCD, when the actual fault was a nail through a cable behind a skirting board. Diagnosis first is cheaper than replacement roulette.
WHEN TO STOP USING THE CIRCUIT
A burning smell, a warm or discoloured power point, or a breaker that will not stay on are all reasons to leave that circuit off and call. Repeatedly resetting a tripped breaker on a live fault is the one thing worth avoiding.

FAULT FINDING & REPAIRS FAQs
Can you find an intermittent fault?
Yes. Intermittent faults are the trickiest, but methodical testing tracks them down rather than just resetting the board and hoping.
Do you do after hours repairs?
Urgent electrical faults can be dangerous, call and we'll sort out the quickest safe option. We are open 24 hours, 7 days.
Why does my safety switch keep tripping?
It's doing its job, detecting a fault. We find which circuit or appliance is causing it and fix the cause, not just reset it.
Is it safe to use my power while I wait for you?
Depends on the fault. If a safety switch has tripped and won't reset, avoid using that circuit. If you smell burning or see scorch marks, turn the main off and call immediately.
Can you usually fix the fault in one visit?
In most cases, yes. We carry a wide range of parts and materials. If a specialised component is needed we'll source it fast and return as soon as possible.
