WHAT AN EV CHARGER INSTALL INVOLVES
An EV charger is not a normal appliance circuit. Most household loads draw hard for minutes. A car charger draws close to its rated maximum for six or eight hours straight, which changes how the cable and the board have to be sized. The install itself is usually half a day where the garage sits near the switchboard, longer where the cable has to travel.
THE LOAD CALCULATION COMES FIRST
Before anything is quoted, the existing maximum demand gets assessed against what the main supply and the board can carry. A 32A charger added to a house already running ducted cooling and an electric oven may need the supply looked at. You hear that before the cable goes in, not after.
SINGLE PHASE OR THREE
Most homes in the Melton and Eynesbury estates are single phase, which supports around 7kW of charging. That is an overnight full charge for almost every car sold here. Three phase and 22kW is worth it in specific cases and a waste of money in most.
RCD TYPE AND PROTECTION
EV charging equipment needs the correct residual current device type for DC leakage, and a dedicated circuit rather than a shared one. Some chargers include protection internally and some do not, which changes what goes in the board. This is a detail cheap installs skip.
WHY THE CABLE SIZE MATTERS
Cable sized for intermittent load will run hot under continuous charging. Undersized cable on a charger is the most common defect in this work, and it does not announce itself until the insulation has been cooking for a year. Sized correctly, it is a set and forget installation.
WHAT THE PAPERWORK SHOULD INCLUDE
On completion you should receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety, the circuit clearly labelled at the board, and the charger commissioned with any load limit actually set rather than left at factory default. If the installer leaves without giving you the certificate, the job is not finished. Some energy retailers also ask for evidence of a compliant install before approving an off peak charging tariff.
