We confirm whether your existing circuit can handle the new appliance or whether a dedicated circuit is needed. We check the connection type and cable sizing before ordering anything.

Cooking appliances are among the heaviest fixed loads in a house, and most of them are supplied hardwired rather than on a plug. That makes the circuit, the isolation point and the certification an electrician's work, not a delivery driver's. A straightforward swap is an hour or two. A first time install with a new circuit is longer.
CIRCUIT SIZING AND LOAD
An induction cooktop can draw considerably more than the ceramic unit it replaced, and a like for like connection to the existing circuit is where trouble starts. The appliance rating plate gets checked against the circuit before anything is connected.
ISOLATION SWITCH
Hardwired cooking appliances need an accessible isolation point so the unit can be switched off for service without pulling the board apart. Behind the appliance does not count as accessible. This is frequently missing in older kitchens.
WARRANTY AND CERTIFICATION
Most appliance manufacturers require installation by a licensed electrician for the warranty to stand, and Victorian rules require a Certificate of Electrical Safety for the work. A cash job with no paperwork can quietly void a warranty on a very expensive oven.
WHAT GETTING IT WRONG COSTS
An undersized circuit on a cooktop trips under load, usually mid dinner and repeatedly. The worse version is a connection that does not trip and instead heats up behind a cabinet where nobody can see it.
GAS COOKTOP, ELECTRIC IGNITION
A gas cooktop still needs an electrical supply for ignition and controls, and the gas connection itself is a separate licensed trade. Where a kitchen is going from electric to gas or the reverse, both trades need coordinating so the appliance is not sitting in a benchtop waiting on one of them. Worth sorting before the delivery date rather than after.

Do ovens and cooktops need to be hardwired?
Many do. Most cooktops and larger ovens must be hardwired on a correctly sized dedicated circuit by a licensed electrician, rather than simply plugged in.
Can you swap my old oven for a new one?

Can any electrician install my oven or cooktop?
It must be done by a licensed electrician. Hardwired appliances require a dedicated circuit and a Certificate of Electrical Safety, this can't be done by an unlicensed person or a gas plumber.
Do I need a new circuit for every appliance?
Most high draw appliances like ovens, cooktops and dishwashers should have their own dedicated circuit. We'll assess what's already in place and let you know what's needed.
