CCTV DONE PROPERLY
A camera system is only as good as its weakest part, and that is usually the cabling or the placement rather than the cameras. A hardwired system on Cat6 with power over Ethernet is more reliable than anything running on wifi, and it will still be recording in three years. Most residential installs take a day depending on cable runs and roof access.
HARDWIRED BEATS WIRELESS
Power over Ethernet runs data and power down one cable, so there is no battery to charge and no signal to drop out. Wireless cameras are quick to install and the first thing to fail in a real incident, usually because the battery was flat.
STORAGE SIZING
Recording capacity depends on camera count, resolution and how many days you want to keep. Sizing the recorder for two weeks of footage is a different specification to sizing it for two days, and it is worth deciding before the hardware is bought.
PLACEMENT AND COVERAGE
Cameras belong at entry points, driveways and anywhere a person has to pass to reach the house. Height matters, and so does avoiding a camera pointed straight into afternoon sun. Coverage gets planned on site rather than guessed from a floor plan.
PRIVACY OBLIGATIONS
Cameras on your property should cover your property. Audio recording in particular has legal limits under Victorian surveillance law, and pointing a camera into a neighbour's yard invites a dispute you do not want. Placement is planned with that in mind.
