SPLIT SYSTEM INSTALLATION
A split system install is two trades in one job, the electrical circuit and the refrigeration work, and both have to be done by somebody licensed for that part. Most single head installs are a day. Getting the head and condenser positions right at the start has more effect on how well the unit performs than the brand on the box.
DEDICATED CIRCUIT
Air conditioning needs its own circuit sized for the unit, not a spur off the nearest power point. Each additional head added to a house draws on a board that was specified before it existed, so the board gets checked before the unit is quoted.
ISOLATOR WITHIN SIGHT
An isolating switch has to be accessible near the outdoor unit so it can be safely isolated for service. It is a small detail, it is a requirement, and it is the sort of thing missing on installs done cheaply.
CONDENSER PLACEMENT
The outdoor unit wants shade, airflow and distance from bedroom windows. A condenser baking in western sun works harder, costs more to run and fails sooner. Placement is worth five minutes of thought before anything is drilled.
LICENSED REFRIGERANT WORK
Handling refrigerant requires the appropriate licence, separate from an electrical licence. Both parts of the job need to be done by somebody entitled to do them, and the electrical side finishes with a Certificate of Electrical Safety.
SIZING THE UNIT TO THE ROOM
An undersized head runs constantly and never gets comfortable. An oversized one cools fast, cycles off and leaves the room clammy because it never runs long enough to remove moisture.
