SMOKE ALARM RULES IN VICTORIA
Smoke alarm requirements in Victoria depend on when the house was built. Homes built or substantially renovated after 1 August 1997 must have mains powered alarms with a backup battery, and in most cases they must be interconnected so that one alarm sounding sets off the rest. Older homes may legally still run battery only units, but the mains powered option is a far better outcome and the wiring is usually straightforward.
WHERE ALARMS HAVE TO GO
On every storey, and outside each sleeping area. In a typical single storey Melton home that means the hallway serving the bedrooms as a minimum, and a second alarm in the living area is sensible rather than required. Placement matters more than quantity.
PHOTOELECTRIC, NOT IONISATION
Photoelectric alarms respond faster to the smouldering, smoky fires that occur in homes overnight. They are what we fit as standard, to AS 3786. Ionisation units are better at flaming fires and worse at the fire that is most likely to kill you in your sleep.

Smoke alarms have a service life. The sensor degrades whether or not the unit still chirps, and every alarm carries an expiry date printed on the back. If yours are undated or over ten years old they are due, regardless of whether they pass a push test.
